Today I read an article by Ashley Hamilton on BookBub Blog announcing that Stephanie Meyer plans to release a new version of Twilight. The twist? It’s gender swapped. Bella is now Beau, and Edward becomes Edythe. For more details, read the article by clicking here.
The reader in me is interested in this new version. I’ve seen memes of gender-swapped fairy tale characters, and I think it would be awesome to read their stories. The same can be said for Twilight. Of course, the story will be very different. An interesting different.
However, the author in me reacts differently to the news. Really, Ms. Meyer? Have you exhausted your ideas, spent all your money, or a combination of both? The article reports that Ms. Meyer wrote the new version to appease her fans, but that sounds shallow to me. I mean, that’s what fan fiction is for, am I right?
Now, I don’t mean to sound judgmental; Ms. Meyer has the right to write anything she desires. But as an author, I find it difficult to imagine rewriting a story in order to swap genders. It almost seems like a waste of creativity. I have so many ideas floating around in my mind that I won’t be able to write them all in one lifetime. But, I guess that’s why Ms. Meyer is a best-selling author and I’m not.
What are your thoughts regarding the new version of Twilight? Will you read it? Take the poll!
Until the next post . . . keep smiling!
