In this week’s feature regarding fairy tale retellings, I focus on Rapunzel. Click here to read the Grimm’s version.
Zel by Donna Jo Napoli ~ This is basically a novelization of the timeless classic. Of course, there are obvious differences since it is a novel and not a short story, but the plot is pretty much the same with no unexpected twists (like a bald Rapunzel). If you want more details to the classic Rapunzel story, this is a must-read because it’s one of the best.
Towering by Alex Flinn ~ Think a modern retelling of the story. Now, factor in drug use, domestic abuse, and teen pregnancy. Imagine Rapunzel told from the prince’s viewpoint, but he’s a troubled, teenage boy attempting to escape his past instead of a classic prince. That’s Towering. It’s not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. One of my favorite parts? The Rapunzel character is named is Rachel.
Movies I’ve Seen:
Tangled (2010) Is there any other movie version aside from this? Tangled is enjoyable in it’s own right, but it’s not really a true Rapunzel retelling.
I would LOVE to see a live-action movie based on Grimm’s Rapunzel.
Books I Want to Read:
Rapunzel Untangled by Cindy C. Bennett ~ Why have I not already read this!? I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by this amazing author, but somehow this one has eluded me. I must remedy that as soon as possible.
Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth ~ The book description calls this a “sumptuous historical novel” and “an enchanting fairy tale retelling.” Hmm. I’m intrigued. Sounds like a must-read to me.
Are you familiar with Rapunzel’s story? Do you have a version or retelling you prefer? Let me know in the comments!
Next Sunday: Red Riding Hood
