Books I’ve Read:
Golden by Cameron Dokey ~ This is another novel included in the Once Upon a Time series published by Simon & Schuster. Actually, it was my introduction to the series. Although a retelling of Rapunzel, it contains a major twist. Rapunzel is bald. That’s correct; she’s bald. The sorceress who adopts Rapunzel does not banish her to a tower. Rue, the sorceress’ biological daughter is trapped in a tower and Rapunzel must save her.
It has been years since I’ve read this book. I believe it’s time for a re-read.
Towering by Alex Flinn ~ Think a modern retelling of the story. Now, factor in drug use, domestic abuse, and teen pregnancy. Imagine Rapunzel told from the prince’s viewpoint, but he’s a troubled, teenage boy attempting to escape his past instead of a classic prince. That’s Towering. It’s not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. One of my favorite parts? The Rapunzel character is named is Rachel.
Tangled (2010) Is there any other movie version aside from this? Tangled is enjoyable in it’s own right, but it’s not really a true Rapunzel retelling.
Books I Want to Read:
Rapunzel Untangled by Cindy C. Bennett ~ Why have I not already read this!? I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by this amazing author, but somehow this one has eluded me. I must remedy that as soon as possible.
Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth ~ The book description calls this a “sumptuous historical novel” and “an enchanting fairy tale retelling.” Hmm. I’m intrigued. Sounds like a must-read to me.
