Despite my best intentions to "get back in the swing of things," I haven't posted in a long time. Fourteen days to be exact. The new school year is well underway, and I've really had to prioritize my activities. Unfortunately, writing has suffered. And crafting. And baking. Okay, pretty much anything that isn't a.) school related or b.) family/household related has fallen temporarily by the wayside. Except reading. I have to retain something to keep my sanity.
Since I moved to a new room this school year (same building, new room), I decided to give my classroom a little make-over. New curtains, new bulletin boards, new furniture, the works. Two of my favorite decorations are my meme board and my quote tree.
I could say the makeover proceeded without a hitch, and that would almost be true. The only exception is the five-shelf bookcase.
When I discovered I would be moving to an unfurnished room, I opted to personally purchase my own furniture rather than accept the secondhand furniture provided. I ordered a five-shelf bookcase, a three-shelf bookcase, a storage cabinet, and a desk from Walmart (think particle board, DIY quality. I'm not made of money.) The smaller bookcase, cabinet, and desk worked relatively well. The large bookcase? Well . . . it was no match for the classroom's fluctuating humidity. Within the first full week of school, the silly thing collapsed like a five-story building during an earthquake. The top shelf crushed the lower shelves, rendering the entire structure unusable. Fortunately, it happened AFTER school hours when no children were present.
I have since replaced the shelf with sturdy, plastic utility shelves. Now, I must find a tidy way to store nearly 120 one-inch student binders on the shelves. Current problem: the binders come tumbling like the walls of Jericho. Eh, should be fixable with a few sturdy bookends.
Anyway, things are starting to settle into a routine, and barring any more furniture crises, I should be able to return to writing. I have plans for this week's Writing Prompt Wednesday and Friday's Favorite Five, so lookout for those. Crafting and baking will have to wait a little longer!
Until the next post . . . keep smiling!
