I am a woman of many interests, and I enjoy devoting time to improving my skills in each one. However, there is one interest I’m finding it increasingly difficult to hone: baking, specifically cake decorating. Sean and I are attempting to lose a few pounds, so it’s not ideal to have cake around the house. And sharing the cakes at work doesn’t help because at the end of the day, I’m still left with at least half a cake to take home. Therefore, my cake-decorating practice is limited to special occasions. Needless to say, I’m a bit out of practice.
My mother celebrates a birthday this week, and over the weekend I baked and decorated a cake for her. Pinterest inspired the idea . . .
. . . but I tweaked it.
I began with a devil’s food chocolate cake mix. I prepared it according to package directions, substituting milk for the cup of water. One box filled two 9” round pans.
After the cake baked and cooled, I got to work. It took me slightly more than an hour, and this is the result:
I am pleased with the results, and my mother loved it. Some day I hope to create something a little more elaborate (preferably using homemade fondant), but at least my limited skills brought joy to a loved one.
