This is the next to the last post in my Fairy Tale Retellings series, and I’m going to change the focus from Grimm’s original tales to Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid. Click here for Anderson’s version.
Books I’ve Read:
Midnight Pearls by Debbie Viguie ~ In this retelling, the “little mermaid” is rescued and raised by an otherwise childless couple. However, the rest of the village treats her as an outcast. She saves a prince, and a love triangle ensues: one between the mermaid/maiden, the prince, and a merman. Another book in Simon and Schuster’s Once Upon a Time series, this story is an entertaining variation.
Movies I’ve Seen:
The Little Mermaid (1989) ~ As far as I know, this is the only video representation of this story. It’s one of Disney’s best with, Frozen aside, quite possibly the best music.
Book I Want to Read:
Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale by Carolyn Turgeon ~ This has the basic synopsis of the original little mermaid. There’s a love triangle between a mermaid, a princess, and a prince. I wonder if it ends differently than the original. I suppose I need to read it to find out!
Do you have a Little Mermaid retelling you would recommend for me? How about a Little Mermaid movie I haven't seen? Let me know if the comments!
