Book I Want to Read:
It is difficult to find novelizations of Rumpelstiltskin. According to the article entitled "An Epic Chart of 162 Young Adult" on Epic Reads website, there has not been a YA retelling of Rumpelstiltskin since 2008 (Read the article here.). Of the ones I found, I've read two and one does not sound like something I would enjoy. However, I did find one I am interested in reading.
A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth Bunce ~ Amazon deems it a “wholly original retelling of Rumplestiltskin.” I definitely want to read it!
Today’s Fairy Tale Retellings focuses on another underrated story: Rumpelstiltskin. The vast number of my students who have never heard this story always surprises me because the first place I heard it was school. Of course, the version I first heard varies greatly from the Grimm version, which you can read by clicking here.
Books I’ve Read:
The Crimson Thread by Suzanne Weyn ~ This retelling is part of Simon and Schuster’s Once Upon a Time series. The setting is New York in the 1880. Rumpelstiltskin is an actual man, and there’s no magic involved.
Rumplestiltskin by Jenni James ~ In this retelling, the reader experiences the story through Rumplestiltskin’s viewpoint, which makes it extremely interesting.
Movies I’ve Seen:
Unless you include the ridiculous Rumpelstiltskin storyline in Shrek Forever After, I can’t recall ever seeing a movie version of this fairy tale. That’s a shame. A Disney life-action version needs to happen!
Once Upon a Time (ABC) ~ Have I mentioned how much I enjoy this show? Rumpelstiltskin is my favorite character on the show. I like how he is also the Beast in the show’s Beauty and the Beast storyline.
I have an idea for my own retelling of this fairy tale. I’ve jotted notes; now, I simply need to plot and write it. It’s going to have to wait, though. I have a sequel to finish!
Have you read the original Rumpelstiltskin? Any suggestions regarding a retelling of the story in written or visual form? Let me know in the comments.
